EDITORS COMMENTS
This full-length portrait depicts Ulrik Christian Gyldenlove (1630-1658), an illegitimate son of Christian IV, the renowned King of Denmark and Norway from 1588 to 1648. The painting, created by the Dutch artist Abraham Wuchters in 1645, captures the young aristocrat in his prime. Ulrik is shown wearing fashionable clothing of the Dutch Golden Age, including a red doublet with gold trim, white breeches, and a black cape. He wears elegant boots with high, rounded toes and carriage boots, which were popular during this period. The setting of the painting is a rustic, outdoor scene, with a ginger-haired Ulrik standing in front of a tree-lined backdrop. A dog lies at his feet, adding to the sense of leisure and affluence. The rich colors and intricate details of the painting reflect the artistic mastery of the Dutch Golden Age. Ulrik Christian Gyldenlove was the son of Christian IV and Vibeke Kruse, a commoner. Despite his illegitimate birth, he was recognized by his father and granted the title of Count. This painting serves as a testament to his noble heritage and the artistic traditions of the time. The portrait is now housed in the National Gallery of Denmark, providing a valuable glimpse into the history and fashion of the 17th century Danish aristocracy.
