The "Valorous" chasing Russian Steamers into Sebastopol, 1854. Creator: Unknown. The "Valorous" chasing Russian Steamers into Sebastopol, 1854. Creator: Unknown

The "Valorous" chasing Russian Steamers into Sebastopol, 1854. Crimean War....the mast-heads of a Russian steamer appeared... another was seen following her. The first proved to be a heavy paddle-wheel frigate; and the second a small sloop. An alarm was immediately given, and in a few minutes our cable was slipped, and we were in full chase of our expected prizes who had opened fire on a battery in course of erection...As we neared them, however, they turned tail and ran back under the batteries; we continued to follow them till we were within 1000 yards of the forts, firing several shots after them, but with what effect could not be seen, as the forts and batteries now opened fire on us...We gave them several broadsides in return; but as we could, of course, make no impression on these stone walls, and were getting a pretty heavy dose of shot and shell...we returned to our anchorage...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the thrilling moment during the Crimean War, as the British steam warship HMS Valorous chases after a pair of Russian steamers attempting to escape into Sebastopol harbor in 1854. The image, though unsigned, is believed to have been published in the Illustrated London News, a prominent British weekly newspaper at the time. The Valorous, a formidable vessel of war, was on a daring mission to disrupt the Russian supply lines and weaken their defenses. As the British ship approached, the mastheads of the first Russian steamer became visible, followed closely by a smaller sloop. An alarm was raised on the Valorous, and in a matter of moments, the cable was slipped, and the chase was on. The Russian steamers, sensing the danger, opened fire on a battery under construction as they attempted to make their escape. Despite the Russian ships' initial resistance, the Valorous continued to pursue them, closing the distance to within 1000 yards of the forts and batteries. The British ship retaliated with several broadsides, but the stone walls proved to be an insurmountable obstacle. With no significant impact being made on the Russian defenses, the Valorous was forced to withdraw and return to its anchorage. This photograph offers a glimpse into the intense and dangerous naval battles that characterized the Crimean War. It is a testament to the bravery and determination of the British sailors who risked their lives to disrupt the Russian supply lines and turn the tide of the war.
