EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithographic print, titled "View of the Garden at the Summer House of V.I. Astashev," dates back to the 1870s and offers a glimpse into the affluent and diverse landscape of Tomsk, Siberia during that era. Created by artists M Kolosov and J Rogulin, the image is part of an album that showcases the city's architectural heritage, including religious structures such as Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Lutheran churches, as well as government buildings like the governor's apartment and the regional administration. The summer house of V.I. Astashev, a prominent figure in Russian society, is depicted in the foreground. Surrounded by lush greenery, the summer house boasts elegant columns and benches, inviting relaxation and contemplation. The garden's serene atmosphere stands in contrast to the bustling urban landscape in the background, where buildings of various styles and sizes are arranged in a harmonious, orderly fashion. The use of color lithography, a popular art form during the 19th century, brings the scene to life, capturing the vibrancy of the gardens and the intricacies of the architectural details. The meeting of frontiers between nature and civilization is beautifully represented in this image, making it a valuable historical and artistic treasure. Once belonging to F.P. Riabushinskii, a prominent Russian merchant family, this print is now part of the Russian State Library's collection, preserving the rich heritage of Siberian architecture and the history of Tomsk for future generations.
