EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum, a prominent British army officer and colonial administrator of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on June 24, 1850, Kitchener rose to fame following his decisive victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, which secured control of the Sudan for the British Empire. As a result, he was granted the title Baron Kitchener of Khartoum. The image, captured by renowned photographer Gabriel Lekegian, portrays Kitchener in his military uniform, complete with a full beard and stern expression. His imposing stature and military attire underscore his reputation as a formidable military leader and a symbol of British imperial power. At the time, Kitchener was serving as the Sirdar (Commander-in-Chief) of the Egyptian Army, and his military successes in Sudan solidified his position as a key figure in British colonialism. He went on to hold various high-ranking positions within the British military and government, including Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for the Colonies. This photograph is taken from "Cassell's History of England, Vol. IX," published by Cassell and Company, Limited, in London, Paris, New York, and Melbourne. The image serves as a testament to Kitchener's significant contributions to British history and his enduring legacy as a military and political leader during the height of the British Empire.
