William Calder Marshall, sculptor, 1878. Calder was a prolific sculptor, producing poetic and ideal works in the Classical style, as well as memorial statues. He won the first prize of £ 700 in competition in 1857 for his design of a monument to the Duke of Wellington, although another design was eventually adopted. He became a Royal Academician in 1852. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper. This print captures the renowned sculptor William Calder Marshall in 1878. Known for his prolific work in the Classical style, as well as memorial statues, Marshall's talent and dedication to his craft are evident in this portrait. With a distinguished beard framing his face, he exudes an air of wisdom and creativity. Marshall's artistic prowess was recognized early on when he won a prestigious competition in 1857 for his design of a monument to the Duke of Wellington. Although another design was eventually chosen, this achievement solidified Marshall's reputation as a skilled sculptor.
