EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Cathedral Square in the City of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. The focal point is 8 Cathedral Square, a stunning half-timbered building that once housed a Boots store. Its upper elevation boasts intricate details and is adorned with painted statues nestled in niches beside the windows. Built in 1911 by Michael Vyne Treleaven, an architect employed by Boots, this architectural gem showcases elements of Elizabethan revival style. The statues on its facade were skillfully sculpted by Gilbert Seale & Son from Camberwell, London. These magnificent sculptures depict historical figures such as Athelwold, King Peada of Mercia, Henry VIII, Prince Rupert, and the Earl of Essex. Over time, this remarkable structure has witnessed various transformations. After serving as a Boots store for many years, it later became home to Wimpy and Burger King restaurants. Despite these changes in occupancy and commercial use throughout history, its charm remains intact. The photograph perfectly captures the essence of this timber-framed masterpiece with its faux Tudor design characterized by black and white accents. It offers viewers a glimpse into the rich heritage and architectural splendor that defines Cathedral Square's unique character.
