EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Marks and Spencer store in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Situated on New Street, this department store has been a beloved fixture of the town for decades. The image showcases the front elevations of both Marks and Spencer and Burton stores, which were designed with striking similarities. In 1934, Marks and Spencer made a significant move from their previous location to occupy the former Burton premises at 19-23 New Street. Meanwhile, Burton acquired the corner site at 17 New Street and constructed a smaller yet equally impressive store in almost identical design. These two buildings became synonymous with classicism and neo-classical architecture. Over time, changes occurred within these historic structures. By 2008, Burton had closed its doors while Vision Express took over its premises. Similarly, after serving as a retail haven for generations of shoppers, Marks and Spencer bid farewell to Huddersfield in 2019. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot's photograph immortalizes this piece of local history by capturing not only the physical beauty of these buildings but also their significance as landmarks within Huddersfield's high street culture. This image serves as a reminder of how our towns evolve over time while still preserving remnants of their past glory through architectural treasures like these department stores.
