Phase II of the Barbican development consists of the area surrounding St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church and the Thomas More Gardens to the west of the site. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the striking Lauderdale Tower, a prominent feature of Phase II in the iconic Barbican development site. Located in the heart of the City of London, this tower stands tall amidst its surroundings, showcasing the unique and bold architectural style known as brutalism. The image offers a mesmerizing view looking west across Thomas More Garden, revealing both the grandeur of Lauderdale Tower and its harmonious integration with nature. The meticulously designed landscape surrounding St Giles-without-Cripplegate Church and Thomas More Gardens adds an element of tranquility to this urban oasis. However, behind this visually stunning scene lies a tale of challenges faced during construction. Originally awarded to Turriff Limited, delays and labor disputes hindered progress on Phase II. Eventually, Turriff withdrew from their contract, leading John Laing and Son Ltd to step in and take over. Despite these setbacks, Lauderdale Tower remains a testament to human resilience and determination. Its robust concrete structure symbolizes strength while offering modern living spaces within its flats. This photograph serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, beauty can emerge. Preserved by Historic England Archive for future generations to admire and appreciate, this print encapsulates not only an architectural marvel but also tells a story of perseverance in creating one of London's most cherished landmarks.
