EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting Artists Cottage, formerly known as Mabs Cottage, nestled in the idyllic countryside of Trotshill, Warndon, Worcestershire. The image showcases the cottage before its remarkable restoration by the talented artist Florence Elsie Matley Moore (1900-1985). Dating back to the 15th century, this timber-framed house had fallen into a state of disrepair and neglect. In November 1938, it was described in a Country Life article penned by Moore herself as "certainly in a very bad state". However, her passion for art and preservation led her to undertake an ambitious project: restoring this medieval gem. By 1940, after countless hours of meticulous work and dedication from Moore's skilled hands, Artists Cottage emerged from its derelict state transformed into a breathtaking masterpiece. The thatched roof now stands proudly atop its sturdy timber frame. The photograph beautifully captures the exterior view of this historic cottage from the south. It offers us a glimpse into its former dilapidated condition while also showcasing its inherent charm and character. As we admire this stunning print captured by Marjory L Wight on behalf of Historic England, let us appreciate not only the artistic vision behind its restoration but also celebrate our rich architectural heritage preserved through passionate individuals like Florence Elsie Matley Moore.
