EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving captures the moment of tension and readiness during the Battle of Waterloo, as an officer of the Chevaux-legers Lanciers (2nd Regiment of Imperial Guard) prepares for action. The mounted private in the background mirrors the officer's stance, both men poised on their horses, swords at the ready. In 1815, this French cavalry unit, part of General Lefebvre-Desnouettes Guard Light Cavalry Division, played a pivotal role in the Napoleonic Wars. They had previously engaged the British forces at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16th June, serving as scouts ahead of Marshal Ney's main body. At the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June, the Chevaux-legers Lanciers were once again called upon to charge the British lines as part of Marshal Ney's massed cavalry attack. The outcome of this battle would ultimately decide the fate of Europe, with the French forces ultimately being defeated. This engraving is a testament to the bravery and determination of the soldiers involved, their uniforms and equipment meticulously detailed, reflecting the pride and discipline of the Imperial Guard.
