Cumberland Market CXP01_01_128

CUMBERLAND MARKET, REGENTS PARK, CAMDEN, GREATER LONDON. A view looking south-east across Cumberland Market towards a terrace of houses on the east side of the square, south of Edward Street, and showing the Kings Head pub on the south side of the square.
Cumberland Market was a hay and straw market from the early 19th century to the late 1920s. By the early 1930s buildings in the area were demolished to make way for council housing and yet more of the area was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. The remaining buildings were demolished in 1950-51 and the Regents Park Estate was built on the site

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse into the past, showcasing Cumberland Market in all its glory. The view looks southeast across the market towards a row of elegant terraced houses on the east side of the square, just south of Edward Street. Amidst this bustling scene stands the iconic Kings Head pub, proudly marking its place on the south side of the square. Cumberland Market holds a rich history as a hay and straw market that thrived from the early 19th century until the late 1920s. However, progress and unfortunate circumstances took their toll on this vibrant hub. In the early 1930s, buildings were demolished to make way for council housing, only for more destruction to follow during World War II bombings. The remaining structures met their fate in 1950-51 when they were torn down to pave way for what is now known as Regents Park Estate. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of loss and destruction endured by this once-thriving marketplace. Preserved through Charles William Prickett's lens, this image allows us to reflect upon London's ever-changing landscape while appreciating both its historical significance and architectural beauty.
