Work began on building Londons Barbican development in 1962. The construction of this complex megastructure was designed to be carried out in six phases, with different contractors working on the site. In 1964, John Laing and Son Ltd won the tender for Phase III. Laing were also responsible for the construction of Phase V, which included the Barbican Arts Centre, Frobisher Crescent and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Barbican construction nearing completion in the City of London. Taken from an office block to the east of the site, it showcases the impressive three tower blocks and the Arts Centre, both on their way to being finished. The Barbican development project commenced in 1962 with a vision to create a monumental structure that would redefine urban living. Divided into six phases, various contractors were assigned different sections of this ambitious undertaking. In 1964, John Laing and Son Ltd secured Phase III and later took charge of Phase V as well. Phase V encompassed not only the iconic Barbican Arts Centre but also Frobisher Crescent and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. These additions further enhanced this architectural marvel's appeal. With its distinctive brutalist design, soaring high-rises, and unique roofscape, the Barbican complex stands as a testament to human ingenuity and creativity. It has become an integral part of London's skyline while offering residents modern flats amidst an urban oasis. This remarkable photograph serves as a reminder of how far we have come since those early days when construction first began on this groundbreaking project. It is a tribute to all those involved in bringing this vision to life – architects, engineers, builders – who transformed an idea into reality for generations to enjoy.
