PORTISHEAD B POWER STATION, PORTISHEAD AND NORTH WESTON, NORTH SOMERSET. A Laing Checker, working at the Portishead B Power Station site.
A cropped version of this image was published in the People section of the May 1957 edition of Laings monthly newsletter, Team Spirit.
Portishead B Power Station opened in the mid 1950 s. Portisheads original power station, which was completed in 1929, became known as Power Station A. Portishead B was built on part of the Great Western Railways original Portishead Railway Station, which was demolished and rebuilt closer to the centre. Portishead B had eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers. The power station closed in 1982, and the chimneys were demolished in 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1950s, capturing a moment in time at the Portishead B Power Station site in North Somerset. In this image, we see a diligent Laing Checker focused on his work amidst the bustling power station. The photograph was so remarkable that it earned a spot in Laings' monthly newsletter, Team Spirit, where a cropped version was published in May 1957. Portishead B Power Station played an integral role in meeting the energy demands of its era. Built on the grounds of Great Western Railways' original Portishead Railway Station, which had been relocated closer to town center, this modern facility boasted eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers. Its predecessor, known as Power Station A and completed in 1929, became synonymous with Portishead's early power generation efforts. However, as time passed and technology advanced further still, Portishead B eventually closed its doors for good in 1982. The chimneys that once stood tall were demolished ten years later in 1992. This powerful image not only showcases the hardworking individuals who contributed to powering communities but also serves as a testament to progress and development during an era marked by rapid industrialization. It is through photographs like these that we can appreciate both our past achievements and how far we have come since then.
