A cropped version of this image was published in the People section of the May 1957 edition of Laings monthly newsletter, Team Spirit.
Portishead B Power Station opened in the mid 1950 s. Portisheads original power station, which was completed in 1929, became known as Power Station A. Portishead B was built on part of the Great Western Railways original Portishead Railway Station, which was demolished and rebuilt closer to the centre. Portishead B had eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers. The power station closed in 1982, and the chimneys were demolished in 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of Portishead B Power Station, located in Portishead and North Weston, North Somerset. In this image, we see a skilled joiner from Laing diligently working on the power station's development. The photograph was taken in the 1950s and later featured in Laings' monthly newsletter, Team Spirit. Portishead B Power Station was an impressive facility that opened its doors during the mid-1950s. It stood as a testament to progress and innovation at that time. Its predecessor, Power Station A, had been completed back in 1929 and gained recognition under that name. The location for Portishead B held historical significance as it occupied part of the original Portishead Railway Station owned by Great Western Railways. To make way for this new power station, the railway station was demolished and rebuilt closer to the town center. With eight coal-fired boilers and four oil-fired steam boilers, Portishead B played a crucial role in powering communities throughout its operational years until its closure in 1982. The chimneys were eventually demolished ten years later. This remarkable photograph not only showcases the immense scale of this industrial project but also pays tribute to all those hardworking individuals who contributed their skills towards shaping our energy landscape during that era.
