Power house JLP01_01_086_22

PORTISHEAD B POWER STATION, PORTISHEAD AND NORTH WESTON, NORTH SOMERSET. A view inside the power house at Portishead B Power Station, showing the no.1 turbo-alternator set in operation drying out the stator windings.
Portishead B Power Station opened in the mid 1950 s. Portisheads original power station, which was completed in 1929, became known as Power Station A. Portishead B was built on part of the Great Western Railways original Portishead Railway Station, which was demolished and rebuilt closer to the centre. Portishead B had eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers. The power station closed in 1982, and the chimneys were demolished in 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling power house of Portishead B Power Station in North Somerset. The image showcases the impressive no. 1 turbo-alternator set, which was a vital component in generating electricity during the 1950s. As we peer into the heart of this industrial marvel, we witness the stator windings being dried out, a crucial process for maintaining optimal performance. Portishead B Power Station held great significance as it opened its doors in the mid-1950s, following its predecessor, Power Station A, completed in 1929. Built on the grounds of the original Portishead Railway Station by Great Western Railways, this powerhouse featured eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers that powered its operations. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. In 1982, Portishead B Power Station ceased its operations and bid farewell to an era marked by hard work and dedication. The chimneys that once stood tall were demolished in 1992. Thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts and their remarkable collection of photographs like this one captured by A© Johansson (Joh), we can now glimpse into history and appreciate not only the physical structure but also the people who worked tirelessly within these walls. This photograph serves as a testament to their commitment towards powering communities and shaping our modern world through sheer determination and innovation.
