EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of Coryton Oil Refinery, located in Thurrock, Essex. The image showcases a dedicated worker operating the control board in the control room of the Air-Lift Thermofor Catalytic Cracking Unit. With focused determination, this individual plays an integral role in ensuring smooth operations within this industrial powerhouse. Coryton Oil Refinery holds significant historical importance as it was inaugurated with great pomp and ceremony by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, back in May 1954. Originally operated by Vacuum Oil Company (a unit of Mobil), it later became a joint venture between BP and Mobil from 1996 onwards. Ownership eventually shifted to BP in 2000 before being transferred to Petroplus Holdings in 2007. The refinery's impact on society cannot be understated; it produced essential products such as petrol and diesel, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel oils, and bitumen. However, despite its contributions to powering industries and transportation for decades, Coryton Oil Refinery sadly ceased operations in 2012. Through this photograph captured by A© Historic England Archive, we are transported back to a time when oil refineries were at their peak. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and technological advancements that have shaped our modern world.
