Graythorp, Hartlepool. An interior view of a fabrication workshop at Graythorp, showing part of an oil platform being assembled.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1970s, providing a glimpse into the bustling fabrication workshop at Graythorp in Hartlepool. The image showcases an interior view of this remarkable facility, where skilled workers are seen meticulously assembling part of an oil platform. Laing Pipelines Offshore played a pivotal role during this era by constructing the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the old William Gray Shipyard. This innovative company utilized their newly created dry dock to build fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project. The scale of this endeavor becomes apparent when we learn that by 1972, a staggering one thousand men were employed at this site alone. Their collective efforts focused on constructing a robust tubular structure capable of supporting a drilling rig destined for deployment in the Forties Oilfield located in the treacherous waters of the North Sea. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It reminds us of our ability to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges through collaboration and innovation within marine engineering works. A© Historic England Archive has preserved this invaluable snapshot from our industrial history, allowing future generations to appreciate and learn from these extraordinary achievements.
