Graythorp, Hartlepool. An aerial view of Graythorp I floating in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp, with the dock gates removed prior to the launch of the oil platform.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off down the River Tees for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the historic moment of Graythorp I, a remarkable oil platform, floating gracefully in the flooded basin of the dry dock at Graythorp. The image showcases the immense scale and engineering prowess involved in constructing this offshore marvel. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore embarked on an ambitious project to build a fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the old William Gray Shipyard. This innovative facility became instrumental in constructing fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's monumental North Sea Oil Project. Prior to its launch, Graythorp I underwent meticulous preparations as seen by the removal of dock gates visible in this photograph. On June 4th, amidst great anticipation and excitement, it was christened before embarking on its maiden voyage down River Tees towards Forties Oil Field located 250 miles away. The significance of this image lies not only in capturing a milestone moment for marine engineering but also highlighting Britain's involvement in the booming oil industry during that era. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to harness natural resources for progress. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this print encapsulates an important chapter in our industrial history while showcasing breathtaking beauty from above.
