Holborn Oasis PLA01_10_014

Oasis Sports Centre, Endell Street, Holborn, Camden, Greater London. An elevated view looking over the outdoor pool at the Oasis Sports Centre, Holborn.
The site on Endell Street has been home to the Bloomsbury Baths and Washhouses (1852) and later Holborn Baths (1902). Work on a new pool began in 1937 but was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. The half-completed pool was used as a water tank during the war. It was opened as an open-air swimming pool in June 1946, and an indoor pool was built alongside it in 1960

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Holborn Oasis, located in Camden, Greater London. The elevated view showcases the stunning outdoor pool at the Oasis Sports Centre, providing a glimpse into its rich history and significance. The site on Endell Street has been an integral part of this community for decades. It was first home to the Bloomsbury Baths and Washhouses in 1852 before becoming Holborn Baths in 1902. Despite facing interruptions due to World War II, construction on a new pool began in 1937. Interestingly, during the war, the half-completed pool served as a water tank. Finally opened as an open-air swimming pool in June 1946, it quickly became a beloved spot for locals seeking recreation and respite from summer heatwaves. In 1960, an indoor pool was added alongside it to further enhance visitors' experiences. The image beautifully portrays sunbathers enjoying their holiday under clear blue skies while swimmers indulge in refreshing water sports. This idyllic scene perfectly encapsulates summertime bliss and highlights how this oasis has provided solace and enjoyment for generations. Simon Inglis's skillful photography allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also the cultural significance of this historic landmark. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Historic England, we are reminded of how places like Holborn Oasis have become cherished symbols of leisure and relaxation within our bustling cityscapes.
