EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Luton, Bedfordshire in 1928. Standing tall and proud is the Connor Hat Factory, a symbol of the town's rich history in hat production. From its vantage point in Bute Street, this factory specialized in crafting exquisite straw goods and hats. The tradition of making straw hats and bonnets had been deeply rooted in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire since the late 17th century, but it was during the latter part of the 19th century that Luton became a hub for this industry. The strategic location near the railway station with direct links to London made it convenient for transportation and trade. As we gaze upon this snapshot from nearly a century ago, we can imagine workers diligently weaving intricate patterns into each hat, their skilled hands bringing forth creations that would adorn heads far and wide. The architectural details of the factory are striking; its grand facade exudes an air of importance as if declaring itself as a cornerstone of Luton's economy. The signage on display proudly announces its presence without mentioning any specific company name. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this print serves as a testament to both craftsmanship and industrial progress. It invites us to appreciate not only the artistry behind these timeless accessories but also pays homage to those who dedicated their lives to perfecting their craft within these walls.
