EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant energy of an amusement park in Skegness during a Laing staff trip in the 1950s. The image showcases both adults and children eagerly gathered around a game machine, fully immersed in the excitement of arcade games. In 1947, after a hiatus of seven years, Laing revived their Area Outings for staff and their families, fostering a sense of camaraderie and togetherness. This particular outing was organized for employees and their families from the Midlands and South Yorkshire regions. It served as a delightful escape from daily routines, allowing everyone to indulge in leisurely activities. The penny arcade machines featured in this photograph were undoubtedly popular attractions at that time. Coin-operated games provided moments of thrill and entertainment for day trippers seeking respite from their everyday lives. Amidst the clinking sounds of coins being inserted into these nostalgic contraptions, laughter filled the air as players tried their luck at various gambling-inspired challenges. This snapshot not only reflects on the recreational aspect but also highlights the spirit of Laing's company culture - one that valued employee well-being by organizing such outings. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print serves as a testament to an era when simple pleasures brought joy to people's lives while creating lasting memories with loved ones under sunny skies at seaside amusement parks like Skegness.
