EDITORS COMMENTS

In this evocative black-and-white photograph by Eric de Mare, titled "Hastings a98 / 05468," we are transported back in time to the historic English seaside town of Hastings in East Sussex during the year 1956. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, as two women in dresses and hats leisurely stroll along the cobblestone street, their conversation carried away by the gentle breeze. The women's elegant silhouettes are framed by the towering, weathered timber buildings that line the street. These structures, with their peeling paint and intricate carvings, bear testament to the town's rich maritime history. The women's refined attire contrasts sharply with the rough, textured facades of the net shops, or fishermen's stores, that they pass by. In the background, a car can be seen parked on the street, adding a touch of modernity to the scene. However, the overall atmosphere is one of timelessness and tranquility, as if the passage of time has come to a standstill. The coastline, with its crashing waves and rugged cliffs, is just a short distance away, adding to the picturesque beauty of the scene. The women's peaceful walk through the historic heart of Hastings serves as a reminder of simpler times, when life moved at a slower pace and the natural world held a greater sway over daily life. This photograph, taken by Eric de Mare for Historic England, is a precious document of a bygone era, capturing the essence of a place and a time that continues to captivate and inspire us today. The image invites us to pause and reflect on the beauty and richness of our past, and to cherish the memories and traditions that have shaped the world around us.
