Bonzo gets that spring feeling by George Studdy

Bonzo gets that spring feeling when confronted by a bull in a field. Chee-Kee the Pekingese escapes the easy way by slipping under the five-bar gate rather than being head-butted over it. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 14 March 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bonzo Gets That Spring Feeling: A Rural Encounter with the Unpredictable Canine Charmer In this charming vintage print by renowned British illustrator George Ernest Studdy, we find Bonzo, the beloved small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, reveling in the joys of springtime in the English countryside. Accompanied by his canine companion Chee-Kee, a Pekingese, Bonzo is seen in the midst of a lively encounter with a formidable bull in a pastoral setting. The scene is filled with the vibrant colors and textures of the season: the verdant green of the grass, the rich reds and browns of the earth, and the cheerful yellow of the daffodils that bloom nearby. The air is alive with the sounds of birds singing and the gentle rustle of the wind in the trees. Despite the imposing presence of the bull, Bonzo appears undeterred, his ears perked up and his tail wagging as he faces the animal with unwavering determination. Chee-Kee, however, is quick to take the easier path and slips under the five-bar gate, escaping the potential confrontation with the bull. This delightful illustration, created in 1923, is a testament to the enduring appeal of Bonzo and the charm of the English countryside. George Studdy's masterful use of line and color captures the essence of a moment in time, transporting us back to a simpler era. Credit: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans
