Having reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, Scott's team faced the arduous task of returning to their base camp at Cape Evans. With supplies running low and the harsh Antarctic conditions taking their toll, the team faced an increasingly perilous journey. On March 16, 1912, during a blizzard, Oates made the fateful decision to leave the group, believing his condition would slow down the others and ultimately endanger their survival. With a heavy heart, his team watched as he trudged into the blizzard, never to be seen again. Oates' selfless act became a symbol of heroism and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
