EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Danish medium Einer Nielsen (1886-1962) in the midst of a séance at the Oslo Spiritualist Association in September 1921. The room is filled with an air of suspense and intrigue, as Nielsen, dressed in a simple white blouse and skirt, reaches out towards a table, her eyes closed in deep concentration. Around her, a small group of onlookers, mostly women, gather in anticipation, their faces a mix of curiosity, skepticism, and awe. At the center of the table, a glass is poised above a white cloth, surrounded by various objects that seem to be waiting for some supernatural intervention. The most striking feature of the scene, however, is the ectoplasmic material emerging from Nielsen's body, visible as a milky white substance oozing from her mouth and extending towards the table. This phenomenon, believed by some to be evidence of spiritual manifestations, was a common occurrence in the world of spiritualism during the early 20th century. Ectoplasm, a term coined by French psychical researcher Édouard Claparède, was thought to be a physical manifestation of the medium's spiritual energy. It was often described as having various textures and shapes, and was said to be capable of producing materializations of the deceased. Nielsen was one of many mediums who claimed to produce ectoplasm during séances, and her abilities drew both admirers and critics from around the world. Despite the controversy surrounding spiritualism and the authenticity of such phenomena, this photograph offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of paranormal history. The image of Einer Nielsen producing ectoplasm at the Oslo Spiritualist Association in 1921 remains an intriguing and enigmatic reminder of the belief in the existence of the supernatural and the human desire to communicate with the departed.
