EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dated around 1846, showcases the esteemed faculty members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the University of the State of New York. The College, which was founded in 1807, was one of the earliest institutions for medical education in the United States. In this image, we find six distinguished figures of the medical community, each with an air of authority and intelligence. From left to right, we have Alexander H. Stevens, Joseph Mather Smith, John B. Beck, John Torrey, Robert Watts, Jr., and Willard Parker. Each man wears the formal attire of the time, complete with waistcoats and cravats, adding to their refined and scholarly appearance. Chandler R. Gilman, who is not visible in this image, would later join the faculty in 1848. Alexander H. Stevens was a renowned surgeon, known for his expertise in amputations and the treatment of wounds. Joseph Mather Smith was a professor of anatomy and surgery, and John B. Beck was a professor of anatomy and materia medica. John Torrey, who was not a faculty member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons but was a professor of botany at Columbia College, is included due to his close association with the medical community. Robert Watts, Jr. was a surgeon and professor of surgery, and Willard Parker was a professor of the theory and practice of medicine. This photograph offers a glimpse into the intellectual and academic world of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the mid-19th century, a time when medical knowledge was advancing rapidly and these men were at the forefront of the field.
