EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting illustration is taken from the 1909 edition of The Frog Prince, a classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The image captures a pivotal moment in the story, as a brave and curious woman, dressed in Edwardian attire, carries the transformed Frog Prince up the ornate, wooden staircase. The Frog Prince, who was once a handsome prince cursed to live as a frog, had been discovered in a well by the woman, who, in her kindness, vowed to break the spell. In this moment, she cradles him gently in her hands, demonstrating her compassion and belief in the magic of the fairy tale. The illustration is the work of renowned English artist, Edward Ardizzone, but was originally created by the celebrated Edwardian illustrator, Arthur Rackham. Rackham's intricate and detailed style is on full display in this image, with the ornate carvings on the staircase and the delicate, flowing fabrics of the woman's dress. The use of muted colors and soft shading adds to the dreamlike quality of the scene, transporting us back to the early 1900s and the magical world of children's literature. The Frog Prince is just one of the many timeless tales brought to life through Rackham's illustrations, which have captivated generations of readers and continue to inspire and delight us today.
