Johannes Secundus, born as Jan Nicolai Everaerts on October 15, 1511, in Den Haag, Netherlands, was a Dutch poet whose life was tragically cut short at the young age of 25. Secundus, a name he earned due to his being the second Jan Everaerts in his family, is best known for his poetic works that reflected the humanist ideals of the time. The image captures the young poet with a serious expression, dressed in the attire of the 16th century. His gaze is fixed on an unseen horizon, perhaps lost in thought or contemplating the profound themes that would later come to define his literary legacy. Born into a family of modest means, Secundus received an education that allowed him to develop a deep appreciation for the classics.
