EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Francois Louis Rousselet, Marquis de Chateaurenault (1637-1716), a renowned French naval commander known for his significant contributions to the French Navy during the late 17th century. Chateaurenault's military career was marked by a series of victories against the Dutch and Spanish, solidifying his reputation as a formidable naval tactician. However, his most notable encounter was with the English in 1702, which ended in a defeat that would come to be known as the Battle of Vigo Bay. Born in Bordeaux, France, Chateaurenault began his military career in the army before transitioning to the navy in 1660. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving under the esteemed Admiral Colbert. Chateaurenault's strategic prowess was first demonstrated during the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678), where he led a successful campaign against the Dutch fleet. His subsequent victories against the Spanish in the War of the League of Augsburg (1689-1697) further solidified his status as a formidable naval commander. Despite his successes, Chateaurenault's defeat at the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702, which took place during the War of the Spanish Succession, is often remembered as a turning point in his career. The battle, which took place on October 23, 1702, resulted in the loss of several French ships and marked the beginning of a decline in French naval power. Nevertheless, Chateaurenault continued to serve his country until his retirement in 1714. This evocative print, likely produced in the late 17th or early 18th century, captures the essence of Chateaurenault's military career – a testament to his achievements, as well as the challenges he faced during a time of great political and military upheaval in Europe.
