EDITORS COMMENTS
Mr. Malcolm Scott, the renowned early Edwardian female impersonator, is captured in this photograph as he embodies the enigmatic and seductive character of Salome. Born as Robert Falcon Scott, Malcolm began his theatrical career as a straight actor at the Theatre Royal in Margate in 1886. However, his unique talent for portraying women soon set him apart from his peers. Unlike the typical caricatured dame parts in pantomime, Malcolm's performances were nuanced and authentic, leaving audiences in awe. Among his most beloved characters were Elizabeth I, Nell Gwyn, Boadicea, and, as depicted here, Salome. This image, dating back to circa 1908, showcases Malcolm's remarkable ability to transform into the biblical figure, capturing her enchanting allure and sensuality. The intricate and elaborate costume, complete with a flowing robe and intricate headdress, further enhances the illusion. Malcolm's talent for transvestism, or cross-dressing, was not a mere source of amusement but a testament to his artistry and dedication to his craft. His performances during the early Edwardian era paved the way for future generations of female impersonators and challenged societal norms surrounding gender and performance. This photograph serves as a reminder of the hilarious and groundbreaking contributions of Mr. Malcolm Scott to the world of theatre.
