EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant and historic image, Agrippina the Elder, dressed in mourning attire, steps onto the shores of Brundisium (Brindisi) in Southern Italy, carrying the ashes of her beloved husband, Germanicus. The year is AD 19, and the scene unfolds against the backdrop of the Roman Empire at a time of great turmoil and loss. Germanicus, a renowned Roman general and stepson of Emperor Tiberius, had been a popular figure in Rome and throughout the empire. His military campaigns had brought peace and prosperity to the provinces, and his charisma and leadership had endeared him to the Roman people. However, his untimely death, believed to have been orchestrated by Tiberius, left a deep void in the empire. Agrippina, who had been Germanicus' wife and the mother of his children, was devastated by his passing. She embarked on a journey from Rome to Brundisium to bring her husband's remains back to the capital city for a proper burial. The journey was a somber and solemn affair, with the ashes of Germanicus carried on a ship across the treacherous waters of the Adriatic Sea. Upon arriving at Brundisium, Agrippina is depicted here, stepping off the boat and onto the rocky shore, her face etched with sorrow and grief. The image captures the raw emotion of a wife mourning the loss of her husband, and the significance of the moment as she brings him home for the final time. The scene is a poignant reminder of the human cost of power and politics in the Roman Empire, and the enduring bond between husband and wife.
