EDITORS COMMENTS
Antoine Quentin Fouquier-Tinville (1746-1795): The Relentless Inquisitor of the Revolution and Reign of Terror This hand-colored lithograph depicts Antoine Quentin Fouquier-Tinville, a pivotal figure during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. Born in Paris, Fouquier-Tinville rose to prominence as a lawyer and later became the public prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal in 1793. He is infamously known for his role in the trials and executions of thousands of individuals, many of whom were falsely accused and sentenced to death. Fouquier-Tinville's unyielding pursuit of those deemed enemies of the Revolution earned him the nickname "The Butcher of Paris." He oversaw the infamous September Massacres of 1792, during which thousands of prisoners were summarily executed in the aftermath of the storming of the Bastille. Fouquier-Tinville's tribunal was responsible for the execution of over 17,000 people between 1793 and 1794. Despite the controversy surrounding his actions, Fouquier-Tinville was initially celebrated as a hero by the revolutionary government and the people of Paris. However, his methods and excesses eventually drew criticism, and he was eventually arrested and executed during the Thermidorian Reaction in 1795. This haunting image of Fouquier-Tinville, with his piercing gaze and stern expression, serves as a chilling reminder of the dark chapter in French history that he helped to create. The lithograph was produced by the renowned French publisher Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, as part of their "Costumes Historiques de la France" series in 1852.
