EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the bravery and determination of the British Guards during the Charge of the Guards at the Battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854, during the Crimean War. The Crimean War (1853-1856) was a major European conflict fought between Russia and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom, Sardinia, and the Kingdom of Prussia. The Battle of Inkerman was a pivotal moment in the war, as the British and French forces, led by Lord Raglan, attempted to break through the Russian defenses and advance on the city of Sevastopol. The Guards, depicted in this print, were a key component of the British forces. Dressed in their iconic red tunics and bearskins, they charge forward with fixed bayonets and swords at the ready. The soldiers in the foreground are focused intently on the battle ahead, their faces set with determination and resolve. The chaos of battle is evident in the swirling clouds of dust and smoke, as well as the flashes of gunfire and the clashing of steel. Despite suffering heavy casualties, the Guards managed to push through the Russian lines and secure a crucial victory for the Allied forces.
