EDITORS COMMENTS
Emperor Napoleon I, resplendent in his ceremonial robes, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," published in Paris in 1852. The image captures Napoleon at the pinnacle of his power, following his coronation as Emperor of the French on December 2, 1804. The elaborate costume, designed by the fashionable tailor Charles Frederick Worth, features a richly embroidered mantle edged with ermine fur, a velvet doublet and breeches, and a golden crown adorned with precious stones. The imperial eagle, a symbol of Napoleon's rule, is prominently displayed on the mantle and the sceptre he holds in his right hand. The background, filled with French soldiers and officials, underscores the grandeur of the occasion and the might of the Napoleonic Empire. This historical document offers a unique glimpse into the opulence and majesty of the Napoleonic Court, providing a fascinating insight into the fashion, politics, and culture of the early 19th century.
