EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases four different moths and their respective larvae: the Grey Dagger Moth (Acronicta psi), the Apopestes Spectrum Moth (Apopestes spectrum), the Peach Blossom Moth (Thyatira batis), and the Noctuelle Psi Moth (Noctua psi). The Grey Dagger Moth, depicted as an adult on the left, is characterized by its grey wings with black markings in the shape of daggers. The larva, shown below the adult, is strikingly patterned with alternating black and yellow rings. The Apopestes Spectrum Moth, represented by the middle adult moth, boasts vibrant orange and black wings with a striking white band across the forewings. Its larva, displayed below, is adorned with a series of yellow and black rings and a distinctive white stripe down its back. The Peach Blossom Moth, illustrated as the adult on the right, is recognized by its delicate, pinkish-white wings with black markings. The larva, shown beneath the adult, is strikingly marked with a series of yellow, black, and orange rings. The Noctuelle Psi Moth, depicted as the third adult moth, is characterized by its brown wings with a distinctive white patch on each forewing. The larva, displayed below, is strikingly patterned with alternating black and yellow rings and a white stripe down its back. This stunning engraving offers a glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century, showcasing the intricate details and beauty of these moths and their larvae. The meticulous hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and realism to the already impressive illustrations, making this a truly captivating work of art and a valuable addition to any natural history collection.
