This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the enigmatic and extinct Hooded Dodo, Raphus cucullatus. The image, created by John Pass after George Edwards, was first published in John Wilkes' Encyclopedia Londinensis in 1803. The Hooded Dodo, also known as Didus ineptus, was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.
