Joes Bridge on the Belgian-Dutch border

Operation Market Garden was a combined British & American land and air operation planned to break into and around the German defences & then on into Germany itself. The land forces, notably just here the tanks of the Irish Guards, waited on the 17th of September 1944 for the airborne forces to fly over and to clear the way ahead. Under the bridge is a memorial to its capture by the Guards and its naming after Lt Col J.O.E. Vandeleur who commanded the tanks. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of anticipation before the pivotal battle of Joes Bridge during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The Irish Guards, represented by their iconic tanks, are poised at the Belgian-Dutch border, waiting for the airborne forces to clear the way ahead. The bridge, named in honor of Lt Col J.O.E. Vandeleur who led the tank charge, is a testament to the bravery and determination of the Allied forces during this critical moment in World War II history. Operation Market Garden was a combined British and American land and air operation, planned to break through the German defenses and advance into Germany itself. The land forces, including the Irish Guards, were to follow closely behind the airborne troops, who were to secure key locations and hold off the enemy until the ground forces arrived. The photograph, taken in the year 2000, shows the bridge in its tranquil state, a stark contrast to the chaos and intensity of the battle that once raged around it. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the Allied forces during this pivotal moment in the war, and the importance of unity and strategic planning in military operations. The memorial under the bridge, a poignant reminder of the past, stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who fought to secure a better future for us all.
