This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the intricately detailed beak of the Kaka (Nestor meridionalis), also known as the Kaka beak, crimson clianthus, or glory pea, with the vibrant flowers of Clianthus puniceus (glory pea) in the background. The Kaka is a native parrot species endemic to New Zealand, with distinctive red, curved beaks that are perfectly adapted for extracting nectar from the tubular flowers of the Clianthus puniceus. The Kaka is currently listed as nationally critical and critically endangered due to habitat loss, predation, and competition with introduced species. The once widespread Clianthus puniceus, which was a significant food source for the Kaka, is now rare and restricted to small pockets of forest in the North Island of New Zealand. This beautiful botanical illustration was created by the talented Miss Jane Taylor and published in Benjamin Maund and the Rev. John Stevens Henslow's The Botanist, London, in 1836.
