EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Lord Nelson Public House in Sheerness, Kent, in the 1940s. The image, taken from the front, showcases the classic design of the pub with its distinctive red brick facade, ornate woodwork, and large, arched windows. The pub's name, "Lord Nelson," is proudly displayed above the entrance, a nod to the famous British naval hero. The Lord Nelson was once a thriving local watering hole, owned and operated by the Charrington and Company Limited. The pub's trading record, as detailed on the back of this print (available upon request), reveals that it was in operation as early as 1936 and continued to serve the community until at least 1956. By July 2018, however, the pub had been repurposed for residential use. The 1940s were a significant time in British history, marked by the Second World War and the rationing of resources. Despite the challenges of the era, the Lord Nelson remained a vital part of the community, providing a place for locals to gather, socialize, and unwind. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the pub was a central hub of social life in Sheerness, Kent.
