EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts intricate reliefs from the monument of Taq-e Bostan, located on the outskirts of Kermanshah in ancient Persia. The reliefs date back to the Sassanian Empire, around the 3rd century AD. The central scene showcases Shah Khosrau II (r. 590-628 AD) engaged in a grand hunt, with an elephant, a deer, and a boar as his quarry. The king is depicted in regal attire, seated atop a horse, with his bow and arrow in hand. The hunt scene is surrounded by other reliefs, including the coronation of Shah Khosrau II, further emphasizing the majesty and power of the king. The print is an illustration from Guillaume-Antoine Olivier's "Travels in the Ottoman Empire, Egypt and Persia," published in 1801. The copperplate engraving was created by Dell Acqua, from the collection of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's "The Most Interesting Voyages," published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of the print offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Persia, making it a valuable historical and artistic artifact.
