EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder, showcases two intriguing species of sea spiders: Nymphon gracile and Nymphon hirtum, with a possible identification of Nymphum femoratum in the background. The image is taken from William Elford Leach's Zoological Miscellany, published in London in 1815 by McMillan. Sea spiders, despite their name, are not true spiders, but rather a diverse group of marine arthropods. They belong to the class Pycnogonida and are characterized by their long, slender legs and elongated bodies. Nymphon gracile and Nymphon hirtum are both small sea spiders, with Nymphon gracile reaching up to 2 centimeters in length and Nymphon hirtum growing slightly larger. Their slender legs, adorned with tiny hairs, allow them to move gracefully through the water. The presence of Nymphum femoratum in the background is less certain, as the identification is not explicitly stated in the original publication. However, it is possible that Nodder included this species as an additional illustration due to its similarities with the other two. This exquisite engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century and the meticulous work of naturalists and illustrators during that time. The delicate handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the intricate lines of the engraving, making it a true masterpiece of scientific illustration.
