EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning wood engraving is a reproduction of Dutch artist Roelandt Savery's painting of a dodo and various other birds, including ducks, macaws, and rails. The original work was created from life and was presented to the British Museum in London in 1759 by George Edwards. The illustration was later drawn and lithographed by Joseph Dinkel for the publication "The Dodo and its Kindred" by Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville in 1848. Roelandt Savery (1576-1639) was a renowned Dutch artist known for his accurate and detailed depictions of animals. His painting of the dodo, an extinct flightless bird native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, is considered one of the most accurate representations of the bird in existence. The dodo, scientifically known as Raphus cucullatus, is shown here with its distinctive large, round body, short neck, and flightless wings. The other birds depicted in the painting are also drawn from life and include various species of ducks, macaws, and rails. The macaws and parrots are shown in vibrant plumage, while the ducks and rails exhibit the intricate details of their feathers and anatomy. This hand-coloured lithograph is a testament to the skill and artistry of both Roelandt Savery and the illustrators who reproduced his work. It provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting the diversity of life on our planet.
