The Xinhai Revolution

The Xinhai Revolution, also known as the Chinese Revolution or the Revolution of 1911, was a revolution that overthrew Chinas last imperial dynasty (the Qing dynasty) and established the Republic of China (ROC) (note - not the Reading Ornithological Club). Featured as inset portraits of: Huang Xing or Huang Hsing ) - Chinese revolutionary leader and politician, and the first army commander-in-chief of the Republic of China. As one of the founders of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Republic of China, his position was second only to Sun Yat-sen. Together they were known as Sun-Huang during the Xinhai Revolution. To his right is Li Yuanhong ), a Chinese politician during the Qing dynasty and the republican era. He was three times President of the Republic of China. When the Xinhai Revolution of 1911 broke out, the Wuchang mutineers needed a visible high-ranking officer to be their figurehead. Li was well respected, had supported the Railway Protection Movement, and knew English, which would be useful in dealing with foreign concerns. This card also depicts the Guangdong Navy agreeing to support the revolution and the capture of Nanking on the 2nd December, 1911 by the revolutionaries after the Battle of Nanking. Date: 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph commemorates a pivotal moment in Chinese history: the Xinhai Revolution, which marked the end of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China (ROC) in 1911. The image features two prominent figures of the revolution: Huang Xing (1874-1916), a Chinese revolutionary leader and politician, and Li Yuanhong (1864-1928), a Chinese politician during the Qing dynasty and the republican era. Huang Xing, also known as Huang Hsing, is depicted on the left side of the image. He was one of the founders of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Republic of China, holding a position of great influence second only to Sun Yat-sen. Together, they were referred to as Sun-Huang during the Xinhai Revolution. To Huang Xing's right stands Li Yuanhong, a respected Chinese politician who was three times President of the Republic of China. When the Wuchang mutineers initiated the Xinhai Revolution, they required a high-ranking officer to serve as their figurehead. Li's reputation, support for the Railway Protection Movement, and English language skills made him an ideal candidate. The photograph also illustrates the Guangdong Navy's agreement to support the revolution and the capture of Nanking on December 2, 1911, following the Battle of Nanking. This significant event marked the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of a new era for China. The Xinhai Revolution brought about profound changes and set the stage for the country's modernization and eventual transformation into a democratic republic.
