EDITORS COMMENTS
Cadmus and the Dragon" is a captivating image from ancient Greek mythology, brilliantly captured in this print from Mary Evans Prints Online. The story goes back to the legendary founding of Thebes, the ancient city of Boeotia in Greece. According to the myth, Cadmus, a Phoenician prince, was ordered by the goddess Aphrodite to establish a new city where he could find a certain sacred cow and a dragon that would follow it. In this print, we see Cadmus, clad in armor and armed with a spear, bravely confronting the fearsome dragon. The dragon, with its serpentine body coiled around a large stone, spreads its wings wide, ready to breathe fire. The scene is set against a backdrop of rugged terrain and a stormy sky, adding to the dramatic effect. The legend continues that Cadmus managed to slay the dragon by tricking it into following him into a narrow passage, where he could corner it and kill it with his spear. After the dragon's death, Cadmus sowed the dragon's teeth, which miraculously grew into armed men. These warriors, known as the Sparti, helped Cadmus build the city of Thebes and defend it against its enemies. This print beautifully illustrates the heroism and bravery of Cadmus as he faces the dragon, a symbol of chaos and destruction. The image is a testament to the enduring power of mythology and the captivating stories that have been passed down through generations. Whether used as a decorative piece or as a source of inspiration, this print is a stunning addition to any collection.
