EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the Teutonic Knights in the midst of their devastating attack on Poland and Lithuania in the year 1410. The Teutonic Knights, a German military and religious order, had long sought to expand their territories in the region, clashing repeatedly with the Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom. In 1409, Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Hermann von Salza, declared war on Poland and Lithuania, leading a formidable army of knights and mercenaries. The scene in this print captures the intensity and chaos of the ensuing battle. Teutonic Knights, clad in their distinctive white mantles and crosses, charge forward on horseback, their lances lowered and ready to strike. Polish and Lithuanian forces, dressed in various colors and armors, defend against the onslaught. Smoke rises from the battlefield, obscuring the horizon and adding to the sense of turmoil. The Teutonic Knights' attack marked a significant turning point in the conflict, with the Polish-Lithuanian forces suffering a major defeat. The war continued for several more years, with the Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom eventually emerging victorious. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the brutal realities of medieval warfare and the complex political dynamics of the time.
