EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithographic print depicts Joanna la Beltraneja (1462-1530), the Spanish Infanta and heiress to the Kingdom of Castile. Born in the 15th century during the tumultuous Iberian Peninsula, Joanna's life was marked by political intrigue and power struggles. Daughter of King Henry IV of Castile and his second wife, Joanna was a key figure in the succession war known as the War of the Castilian Succession, which erupted after her father's death. In this image, Joanna is portrayed as a regal and elegant queen, wearing an ornate headdress adorned with pearls and precious stones, and a magnificent necklace. Her royal status is further emphasized by the richly embroidered gown and the scepter she holds in her right hand. In 1475, Joanna was married to King Alfonso V of Portugal in a bid to secure an alliance between the two Iberian kingdoms. The marriage was controversial, as Joanna was only six years old at the time, and many believed that her uncle, the powerful Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon, had manipulated the arrangement to further his own political goals. Despite the controversy, Joanna's marriage to Alfonso V lasted until his death in 1481. After Alfonso's passing, Joanna returned to Spain and lived out the rest of her life in seclusion, never again assuming the role of queen. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithography is taken from the "Cronica General de Espana," a historical work published in Asturias and Leon in 1867. The print, created by the artist Letre, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Iberian monarchy during the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
