EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph, sourced from The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, transports us back in time to an Edwardian era afternoons past. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, is seen in a relaxed and playful moment, engaging in a friendly game of croquet with an unidentified companion. The year is estimated to be around 1900, based on the Prince's age and attire. The Prince, dressed in a smart summer suit and straw boater hat, exudes an air of sophistication and charm. His companion, dressed in a high-necked blouse and long, full skirt, is equally elegantly attired. The scene is set in a lush, green garden, with a beautiful Victorian-era lantern in the background, adding a touch of whimsy and intrigue. The use of a lantern in the garden suggests that the game of croquet may have been taking place during the late afternoon or early evening hours. The lantern also serves as a reminder of the era's reliance on natural light and the importance of creating ambiance through simple, yet elegant means. The photograph is a beautiful example of the Edwardian era's love for leisurely pursuits and the appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. The Prince's relaxed demeanor and the idyllic setting make this a truly enchanting image that invites us to imagine a time when life moved at a slower pace and the simple joys of an afternoon spent in the company of friends and family were cherished.
