EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image features a Relief Fund cheque issued by the RMS Titanic in 1917, addressed to Mrs M A Ransom of Knowle, Bristol, for the sum of four pounds and two shillings. The cheque was signed by an officer of the Exeter and District Bank, and served as a crucial financial lifeline for the widow of James Ransom, a first-class saloon steward who tragically lost his life during the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. The Titanic, a symbol of luxury and opulence, was a White Star Line ocean liner that set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City on April 10, 1912. The ship, carrying over 2,200 passengers and crew, struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank in the early hours of April 15, resulting in the loss of over 1,500 lives. The RMS Titanic Relief Fund was established to provide financial assistance to the families of the crew members who perished in the disaster. The fund raised over £100,000, which was distributed to the families of the crew members in the form of cheques like the one shown here. This poignant artifact serves as a reminder of the human cost of the Titanic disaster and the efforts made to support those left behind. The cheque, dated April 28, 1917, bears the signature of an officer of the Exeter and District Bank, and is a testament to the generosity and compassion of the public during a time of great tragedy.
