EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble visage of John Perceval, the Second Earl of Egmont (1711-1770), an influential statesman of 18th century England. The Earl is depicted in formal attire, wearing a red velvet coat and a white lace jabot, with a crisp white shirt and a black waistcoat. His piercing blue eyes gaze intently out from the canvas, conveying a sense of intelligence and determination. Born into the Perceval family, one of the oldest and most distinguished in Ireland, John Perceval was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and later at the Inns of Court in London. He began his political career in the House of Commons, representing the borough of Callan in Ireland. In 1744, he was appointed as a Member of Parliament for Wiltshire, and in 1746, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Arden and Viscount Arden and later as Earl of Egmont in 1753. Egmont served in various government positions under Prime Ministers Robert Walpole, Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington, and George Grenville. He was a key figure in the administration of the Duke of Newcastle, serving as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council. Egmont's political career was marked by his support for the Hanoverian succession and his opposition to the Jacobite cause. This portrait, likely painted in the mid-18th century, is a testament to the Earl's distinguished career and his place in the annals of British history. The artist is unknown, but the painting captures the essence of a man of great intellect, political acumen, and noble bearing.
