EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning bronze statue depicts Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of embalming and mummification, as well as the god of the dead. Anubis is easily recognized by his distinctive jackal head and bare feet. This particular statue is believed to date back to the 26th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, around 525 BC. It is currently housed at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. Anubis was an essential deity in ancient Egyptian religion, playing a significant role in the afterlife. He was often depicted seated on a throne or a mastaba, a type of flat-roofed, rectangular ancient Egyptian building, with his face turned towards the west, the direction of the setting sun and the underworld. The god's role in the embalming process made him a protector of graves and tombs, ensuring the safe passage of the deceased into the afterlife. The intricately detailed features of this statue show Anubis with a serene expression, his jackal head adorned with a diadem and a collar, and his body covered in a linen garment. His arms are crossed in front of his chest, and he sits on a simple seat. The interior of the statue reveals the intricate details of the god's body, showcasing the skill and artistry of the ancient Egyptian metalworkers. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek's Anubis statue is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of ancient Egypt. Its presence in Denmark serves as a reminder of the global connections and influences that have shaped the world's artistic and religious heritage.
